Seattle Metropolitan Magazine partnered with national survey company TopDentists, which sent ballots to all dentists listed online with the American Dental Association in King and close-in Snohomish and Kitsap counties, asking, “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?”
Dr. Higashi and his team have been the answer to this question for the 4th consecutive year. Congratulations!

VELscope - Revolutionary Oral Cancer Screening at the your dental visit!
There are approximately 35,000 cases of oral cancer per year. Meaning, one person in North America dies each hour as a result of oral cancer. Oral cancer can develop not only among older individuals or those with a history of alcohol/smoking/tobacco use, but also in younger patients.VELscope is a revolutionary oral cancer screening device powered by tissue fluorescence visualization technology. Research funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and other organizations, found that VELscope is effective in helping to detect cancerous, precancerous lesions, and abnormal tissues. Plus, the exam only takes 2 minutes to perform and involves NO uncomfortable scraping, rinsing, or stains! This screening technology is an adjunctive tool to a visual oral cancer examination, and meets the gold-standard for oral cancer detection. As much as we want to create a great-looking smile for you, we value you and helping you maintain your overall health.
In the early stages of oral cancer's development, it often is painless, and the physical signs may not be obvious. This makes it a very dangerous disease. Regular screenings by a qualified medical or dental professional, combined with a person's knowledge of the warning signs and symptoms, will allow its discovery in the earliest possible stages, when cure and survival are most likely. Even pre-cancerous tissue changes can often be detected by a trained professional. Below are a few of the early indicators:
Red and/or white discolorations of the soft tissues of the mouth
Any sore which does not heal within 14 days
Hoarseness which lasts for a prolonged period of time
LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY / LASER HYGIENE
In a continuing effort to provide comprehensive, non-surgical periodontal care, the use of the laser is a tremendous aid in treatment of periodontal disease. The laser can selectively target diseased tissue while killing bacteria and biostimulating the bottom of the pocket. This gives a marked advantage to our patients in the treatment of their periodontal disease.
Dental lasers were first introduced more than 20 years ago. The earliest models had one single, very limited function: that of desensitizing teeth. Since then laser technology, laser treatment, as well as patient awareness and demand have grown and developed at an incredibly rapid pace. Lasers have become highly regarded by the public, the dental profession, and the research community.
Moreover, the FDA’s acceptance of both soft- and hard-tissue dental laser treatments is ample proof of the safety and the efficacy of these procedures. This, in turn, has raised the public’s confidence in lasers to unprecedented levels. Patient polls constantly position laser dental therapy as one of the most attractive facets of dental treatment. The soft-tissue diode laser, in particular, has become a must-have mainstream technology for the general practice. Dental lasers offer the practitioner an expanded scope of treatments, in addition to improved and faster healing.

PATIENT TESTIMONIAL:
Dear Dr. Mike & Team,
Just wanted to send a quick note to tell you how pleased, AND encouraged I was after my most recent follow-up with your hygienist, Jessy. The results from the laser treatment are nothing short of astounding, and this is the source of my encouragement. As you know, my periodontal disease has been slowly winning the war. Every check-up the news was bad: more pockets…or deeper pockets. Time to get aggressive: root planing. I was, I confess, rather shocked and more than a little bummed out when I got a look at myself in the mirror after the first session on the right side of my mouth: bruised and bleeding. It was 10 days or more before I dared to run the Sonicare onto the gumline. When I came back in for the second half of the treatment on my left side, Jessy introduced me to the new laser equipment. The promised reduction in bacteria below the gumline sounded good, and it couldn’t hurt, right? Two days later, I had to remind myself to be careful with the Sonicare, because I had no swelling, and no tender spots. Wow. Big difference. Night and day. Now, just 30 days later, all of my pockets have shrunk or disappeared completely. I’m down to two 5 mm spots, which Jessy re-treated. I’m convinced they’ll be gone, or become “fours” the next time I come in…and soon it will be just a wonderfully boring litany of “2-2-3, 2-2-2, 3-2-3.” Incredible. Thank you for taking a risk on the new technology. Not only have you turned the tide in the war on my periodontal disease, you’ve given me hope for a completely different outcome – one I can smile about.
Bless You!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What is a PROPHY?
Also known as prophylatic teeth cleaning, a prophy is a non-therapuetic procedure for the maintenance of a healthy mouth. Prophy is only provided for patients without periodontitis, gum infection that destroys the soft tissue and bone supporthing the teeth.
What is PERIODONTAL MAINTENANCE?
Periodontal maintenance (PM) is distinctly different from a prophy. PM is commonly prescribed to patients who have had active perio treatment. It involves ongoing treatment for periodontitis. The objective of PM is to keep the disease under control.
What is SCALING and ROOT PLANING?
Scaling and root planning is frequently referred to as ‘deep cleaning’. Deep cleaning is the treatment of choice for an infectious disease called periodontal disease. This type of "deeper cleaning" is unlike a professional polishing or prophy that removes only the soft sticky plaque that exists above the gum line. Scaling and root planing are methods for treating gum disease, which is marked by the formation of pockets -- measuring greater than 3 mm -- around the teeth.
Deep cleaning is normally performed by your dentist or dental hygienist in a couple of visits. The exact number of visits however depends on your dentist and the amount of tarter build up. Often your dentist will choose to administer local anesthetic to make the procedure virtually painless. The goal of the procedure is to eliminate the infection by removing the bacteria containing plaque and tarter that has attached to your teeth and their roots under the gum.
The deep cleaning is either done manually or with an ultra-sonic instrument called a Cavitron, or sometimes a combination of the two. Both techniques loosen and remove plaque and tarter build up.
In addition, antibacterial irrigants or local antibiotics such as Arestin or Atridox may be used in conjunction with the cleaning procedure to further reduce the number of bacteria around the gums.
SCALINGvs. PLANING
Scaling scrapes off the plaque and tarter and then root planning smoothes the root. A smooth clean and healthy root surface allows the gums to reattach the the teeth. Since root planning is a procedure that removes the irritants, much like removing a splinter from an infected finger, patients generally experience little discomfort afterwards and the gums actually feel better.
